A new study suggests that train accidents on BNSf’s rail network are on the rise.
The study by the Institute for Transportation Studies and the B.C. Government Railway Employees’ Association found that there were 26 train derailments between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2018 on the company’s rail system.
Of those, 23 were fatal, with six of those fatalities being fatalities of young children.
“This report is of particular interest because it focuses on a key rail safety issue, the rise in train accidents over the past two years,” said Dr. Mark D. Taylor, the study’s author and professor of transportation studies at the University of British Columbia.
“There has been a large rise in fatal train accidents, both fatal and nonfatal, for both younger and older workers.”
In 2016, the BCTF was the first company to be hit by a train derailment, but that incident occurred at a different station than the one where this new study took place.
It’s been a while since the last major derailment at the same train station, and BNSFs recent track upgrades have made the tracks safer.
But there have been a lot of incidents since then, with five fatalities in 2017 alone.
There’s no evidence to suggest that the BTSA and the CUPE are behind the rise of fatal train derailings, Taylor said.
The CUPEs union said in a statement that it was working with the union to address the issue.
“We continue to believe that a safe and reliable rail system is critical to the prosperity of the region, and we look forward to working with BNSB and the Government to address this issue,” said CUPES president Mike Friesen.
There has also been a rise in the number of train accidents involving young children and young adults since 2015.
The BNS Fords new track is one of three to be installed this year to make it more environmentally friendly.
The rest of the company is on track for construction on the other two.
The new track was originally designed by the Canadian Railway Museum.
It’s a two-lane structure that’s connected to an underground track by a bridge and has been built with a combined total cost of $1.7 billion.
It will be completed by 2021, but there is a delay on the two track sections to get them installed.
